Lipari vacanza- cont. 2009

La Mimosa is a chocolate and pastry shop on the upper street in Cannetto. We stumbled upon it one afternoon when we were jonesin' for some dolci. In the window was a freezer case filled with rusted tools, door hinges, light bulbs and beautiful Bialetti style espresso makers. When we entered the store, we discovered all these items were amazingly carved from CHOCOLATE! It was so impressive we asked to take pictures. The owners and chocalatiers of the shop were a warm and welcoming couple named Salvatore and Marilena Lo Schiavo. They, of course, remembered Rob's grandparents who used to own a shop on the lower street in Cannetto before leaving for Messina after WWII. It is pretty amazing how many people are interconnected on the island. A very cool testament to the close knit Aeolian people. Instantly we are embraced and treated as family. LOVE IT!

Even the threads of the light bulbs, nuts and bolts, and the expresso makers functioned!

A special sicilian cake called "Cassata"

Out on the boat for sguid fishing! Done at night, our friend Elio took us out on his boat just a few hundred yards from the shore where we dropped fishing line tied to the hook with a lure with a light inside to draw the squid. Everytime one was pulled in, it would squirt sea water all over me (yes, I screamed everytime).

Elio, very serious about his fishing!

Squid in a bucket

A little one, you can see what the hook is like.

Rob's first catch. After we caught enough squid to feed four, we went back to Elio's home and his wife was all ready to make our dinner. Simply, she just placed the squid into a frying pan with a little oil and threw a lid on. After about 5 minutes, we were munching down the freshest squid you ever ate....delicious and not at all "fishy" tasting!

Dinner with frineds on Ghery's patio.

Ghery's bouganvilla! Rob and Peter have spent many trips working on pruning and tying up this monstrous plant and the pay-off is a beautiful covered patio where we enjoy good food, gorgeous views and friends and family!

Rosaria! Put down that knife!
